On the planet Ekos, famous historian and cultural observer John Gill appears to have violated the Prime Directive by introducing Nazi ideology to the Ekosians. Posing as a Nazi officer, Kirk resolves to find the truth.

Lured by a fake distress call, the Enterprise crew find themselves under the control of five Kelvans, who plan to use the ship to make the 300-year trip back to their home in the Andromeda Galaxy.

Finding the USS Exeter's crew killed by an unknown virus, Kirk's team beams to the planet below, where there is a natural cure. There they discover the Exeter's captain violating the Prime Directive in his pursuit of a valuable prize.
